American Safari Cruises acquires ship for Alaska expansion
Luxury soft-adventure operator American Safari Cruises will more than double its capacity in Alaska next year with the addition of a ship from defunct Cruise West, the 102-passenger Spirit of Endeavour. The ship will be renamed Safari Endeavour and after an extensive renovation will operate with a capacity of 86 guests.

The line currently offers Alaska cruises with three fancy yachts, the 12-passenger Safari Spirit, 22-passenger Safari Quest and 36-passenger Safari Explorer.
"This is an ideal time to expand our fleet," said Dan Blanchard, American Safari's CEO. "In our 14-year history, our occupancy rates have never been higher, and we are seeing an increase in demand for the type of small-group adventure travel we offer."

Officials said the Endeavour would cruise on week-long round-trip itineraries from Juneau from May to Sept., beginning next year. Fares - including drinks, shore excursions and such activities as kayaking - will start at $4,795 per person.
Like the other American Safari ships, the Endeavour's itinerary will avoid popular ports in favor of two days of exploration in Glacier Bay National Park and expedition cruising in Icy Strait, Frederick Sound, Thomas Bay, Chichagof Island, Ford's Terror and Endicott Arm.
The ship will also do a two-week cruise from Seattle to Juneau and the reverse, in spring and fall.
The renovation of Endeavour – which was launched in 1983 as the Newport Clipper – will focus on making the ship more upscale, officials said. The result will be five stateroom categories including three Master, 21 Commander, 12 Captain, three Admiral and four Commodore Suites – created by merging two former staterooms and adding new step-out balconies. All staterooms will have window views.
Other amenities being added include two massage rooms, two hot tubs, a sauna, exercise equipment, a wine bar and a library. The ship will have an all-American crew of 34.
