Asian carp found in Wisconsin
State wildlife officials say it was bound to happen eventually. Evidence of Asian carp has been found in Wisconsin waterways, with an angler recently catching a bighead carp in the Lower Wisconsin River and traces of silver carp DNA found in the St. Croix River last month.
DNR Aquatic Invasive Species coordinator Bob Wakeman says they always knew it was going to happen, but for now it only appears a small number of the fish are making their way into the state from the Upper Mississippi River Basin. Wakeman says there does not appear to be a breeding population present right now, which is also a good sign.
Asian carp have long been a concern because the fish are voracious eaters of plankton, which makes up much of the aquatic food chain. The carp filter out the plankton and deprive native fish and wildlife of their most common food source.
Wakeman says the DNR is calling on anglers to help them keep track of where the species of carp appears. He says anyone who catches what they suspect to be a bighead or silver carp should take a photo and put the fish on ice, then take the evidence to a DNR warden to review.
Boaters are also urged to follow rules designed to stop the spread of invasive species, such as draining live wells and not moving live fish.

Klobuchar, Franken testify at hearing for bipartisan St. Croix Bridge legislation
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar today (Thursday, July 28) testified before the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee’s National Parks Subcommittee in support of the bipartisan legislation that will move the St. Croix Bridge project forward.
Klobuchar introduced the bipartisan legislation with U.S. Senators Herb Kohl (D-WI), Al Franken (D-MN), and Ron Johnson (R-WI) this past May.
Klobuchar was joined at the hearing by Stillwater Mayor Ken Harycki who emphasized the importance of the project to the community. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) also testified at the hearing supporting the project, which both Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker support.
“The residents and businesses in Stillwater and along the St. Croix River Valley deserve a safe, more efficient alternative to the 80 year-old Lift Bridge, which is outdated for the needs of the region,” said Klobuchar. “The bipartisan legislation would help break the deadlock and bring this project out of bureaucratic limbo, and it is my hope that this hearing will help move this process forward.”
Klobuchar pushed to schedule today’s hearing so the legislation can move forward as quickly as possible and has also been working with Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN) who has introduced similar bipartisan legislation in the House with Representatives Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), Chip Cravaack (R-MN) and Sean Duffy (R-WI).
Over the past few months, Klobuchar has consulted the Department of Transportation and National Park Service on the legislation which also contains a package of mitigation efforts to protect the St. Croix River. These measures were agreed to in 2006 by the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation and Natural Resources. The mitigation plan would help promote scenic and recreational values of the St. Croix River by eliminating existing man-made structures, protecting river bluff lands, restoring park land, and ensuring public boat access.
The current St. Croix River crossing is at the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge. As the bridge has aged, closings for structural and vehicle collision repairs and maintenance inspections have increased. In addition, the bridge’s unique function as a lift bridge, which lifts frequently to allow boats to travel the St. Croix River, is a source of severe traffic congestion.
