Commission Amends Municipal Code, Auto Square May Ditch New Orleans Look

Soon, various car dealerships located in the Cerritos Auto Square is not only brilliant feature new and used vehicles, but architectural themes redesigned as well.

But first, the Cerritos City Council would approve the unanimous decision of the Planning Commission made at its meeting Wednesday, October 5 at the Council Chambers to amend the Municipal Code of the city.

During the public hearing of the committee meeting, Cerritos Ford Lincoln requested the code be changed "regarding the topic of architectural design and development of existing standards related to the specific plan Cerritos Auto Square."

In his presentation, the current Planning Manager Robert A. Lopez said: "(City) staff recommends that dealers be given more flexibility in architectural design."

He added that the recommendation would allow dealers to deviate from the current architectural theme, New Orleans style, and implement the themes of their choice.

Lopez told the architectural design in New Orleans, was especially "unique" Auto Place since 1975. He said some of the characteristics of the New Orleans style are arched windows, wrought iron detailing and mansard roofs.

Lopez said that the code changes were necessary to ensure that manufacturers have their own 'standard image that highlights the brand of cars. "

Despite the changes to the Municipal Code, Lopez said staff recommends that manufacturers comply with additional requirements including:

"Instead of using a building of architectural style to define the identity of the Cerritos Auto Square," says Lopez, "the common denominator will be achieved through the landscape and streetscape."

Dave Conant, owner of a dealership in the Auto Square, said he was reluctant to endorsement of the idea at first, but after mulling over the decision, he changed his mind.

Conant said the majority of franchise owners agree with the changes. He added that while "a marketing cooperative and collective gaze" have proven effective, it was time for a change.

"Customers are trained to expect a Honda dealer looks like a certain thing," he said. "I think the time has come that we must recognize that we leave New Orleans architecture.
