HEALTH:Students learn special skills outside the classroom

&Nbsp;  For children with social cognitive deficits, the ability to develop and enjoy positive, meaningful relationships with peers, family members and the community may pose an enormous challenge. It can be difficult for them to communicate appropriately with others, initiate and maintain friendships, deal with frustration and stress, understand how to solve social problems and deal with peer pressure and bullying.    Individualized social skills instruction in a small group setting can help address these challenges. BLAST, a new program provided by BLAST Educational Services of New Jersey and Princeton HealthCare System, is designed to provide the social curriculum and behavioral support necessary to help these children thrive at home, at school and in the community.    Students enrolled in the program may include children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified, attention deficit and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, speech and language delays and disorders, nonverbal learning disorders, bi-polar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, learning disabilities, social deficits, selective mutism, and semantic-pragmatic disorders.    Class size will average six to eight students per two professionals, with exceptions made in situations where teachers feel the students in a particular group would benefit from a different structure. Students are placed into groups with others who are age or grade appropriate and share similar cognitive levels and social or behavioral needs.    Another hallmark of the program is flexibility. Parents are encouraged to keep in contact with staff members, especially to report any noteworthy incidents or events that their children encounter at school or in the community. For example, if a particular child, or a group of children, in a given class is having trouble with bullies, the staff can gear one of the educational sections of the next class toward that topic.    In addition to social skills instruction, the BLAST program offers additional services including professional consultation, academic remediation, positive behavioral support, organization/study skills support, test preparation, IEP support, development of visual support/social stories, consultation and/or collaboration with school teachers and speech and language support.
