Imaginative gardeners build tracks through backyards

Spokane is a city rail. While trains are a common sight every day, some of the most picturesque lines run right through the local gardens.

Tony and Therese Goatz live in Spokane Valley. Having a garden railroad model was always on the mind of Tony.

"The first time I saw this garden, I knew immediately that this was my track was going," he said.

Tony was a big fan of the rail for as long as he can remember and Theresa says she's "just for the ride." He designed the railway and it gardening.

For starters, he bought a number of HO magazine and saw ads for the railways with a garden for the Company's internal Northwestern Railroad Garden. He and Theresa joined the club and enjoyed yard landscape ideas and other suggestions.

"The biggest challenge is that we have a flat yard," said Tony. "I could not drive into the yard so I got several feet of soil dumped in the driveway and it has all brought there by wheelbarrow. My neighbors and their children helped me to do so."

Another challenge was that the soil has been ordered, sandy loam with bark in it.

"It's still settling, which is a real problem for the laying of the railway," he explains.

Tony started with a small loop of track and grew from there. Its goal was to have a mountain railway realistic appearance with tunnels, rivers, ponds, a waterfall and a city. He did a great job to do just that.

"I like doing things differently," says Tony. "I have a tunnel with a furrow in the middle so that the train arrives in a place different than you expect.It really surprises people, that was fun. "

He runs two sets of G-scale trains - which are approximately 1/29th actual size - two sets of tracks, so it can run two trains at the same time.

A train has a diesel locomotive and the other is steam. Each is battery powered and they run over 600 feet of track.

Theresa said that the landscaping of a garden railroad is a bit of a challenge.

"Sometimes I can not do any planting, because Tony is constantly changing things," she said. "Aside from that, you need to keep the plantations to scale, so you must cut them often.I look for ground cover plants and small to use.

"But it was a great way to incorporate a husband's love of trains with the love of a woman gardening.
