The euro-area average inflation rate was 2.5% in July. With Irish inflation at 1.0%, this is the 38th consecutive month that Irish inflation has been running below the euro-area average. As can be seen on the attached chart, more than half of the increase in relative prices in Ireland since the formation of the euro-area have now been reversed. "As a result of recent market turmoil oil prices have dropped and interest rates will be lower than previously expected. This is good news for Irish consumers. At the very least the ECB will dismiss any notions of further interest rate increases and recent hikes could even be reversed. This will provide some relief for hard-pressed households. "The CPI was unchanged in July with VAT related price reductions in a number of sectors offset by increases in food and mortgage interest payments. The price reductions in items affected by the VAT cuts ranged from over 4% for newspapers to 0.9% for restaurants. Tourism related prices would typically have increased in July, so there is some evidence of the reduction being passed on to consumers, however, it will probably take a few months for the index to fully reflect these price reductions. It is essential that consumers get the full benefit of the VAT reductions and any business that has not passed the savings should do so immediately. "The increase in food prices in July was due to significant hikes in commodity prices earlier in the year. It was somewhat surprising that price increases were not passed through until now. The overall outlook for inflation is now much more benign and price rises are likely to be limited over the coming year or so.
