New assistant district attorney enjoys being back in East Texas
Hog hunter by hobby and assistant district attorney by trade, the newest member of Angelina County’s prosecution team said he’s happy to be back in his hometown of Lufkin.
“One of the great things about coming back to the Lufkin area from Houston is the last two weeks, every morning before I’ve come to work, I’ve saddled a horse, gotten my .308 rifle and gone wild pig hunting and still can be at work by 8 or 8:30,” said new Assistant District Attorney Lane Thompson.
“I’ve hit some things,” he continued with mock overconfidence. “My dad said, ‘Did it squeal or roll over? No? Then you didn’t hit anything.’”
While hog hunting may be hit-or-miss for Thompson, courtroom prosecution is a different story. Working as a “hired gun” in the private sector of civil law in Houston, Thompson made the switch to criminal law four years ago after the medical malpractice business “dried up.” In doing so, he rediscovered his passion for law.
“I thought I was going to go to law school to change that world,” Thompson said. “That was incredibly idealistic, but I thought at the (Harris County) DA’s office I could attempt to do so at a micro level, one case at a time, one defendant at a time. I think that is absolutely right.”
After selling himself to the panel of “good cops” and “bad cops” making Harris County’s hiring decisions, Thompson began his career in criminal law.
“In being an assistant DA, you really do get to try to change little worlds, or the world around that defendant, one defendant at a time. It’s fascinating,” he said. “The trick in that with plea bargaining, or attempting to figure out what to offer a defendant, is to determine, ‘Is this someone we can save or help, or is this an incorrigible person there is no saving or helping and we just need to protect society from that person?’ That’s the tough choice we deal with.”
Although he faces tough choices in the courtroom, the decision to return home to Lufkin was an easy one.
“I waited until my son graduated high school, which was May, and I thought I would just come up here and help my dad on the ranch,” he said. “ I had ran into (Angelina County District Attorney) Clyde (Herrington) a few years ago and I had told him, ‘Hey, they’re killing me down here in Houston. They’re working us to death. If anything ever opens up, let me know.’”
With the leaving of prosecutor Julie Alston, the stars aligned for Thompson, and he began his career with Angelina County two weeks ago.
