Things to know about ADHD
MANILA, Philippines -- ADHD is the new epidemic. There is a marked increase of parent-reported ADHD diagnosed children here and abroad. Current stats may not be available in the Philippines. In the U.S. about 3-7 percent of school-aged children have ADHD. There are more boys diagnosed with ADHD than girls at a rate of 3:1. Children with ADHD are 30% slower in emotional development than non-ADD peers. For instance, a 10 year old will have the emotional development of a seven year old and a 20 year old will have the emotional maturity of a 14 year old.
About one fourth of children with ADHD have serious learning disabilities (i.e. oral and listening skills, reading comprehension and / or math). Sixty-five per cent (65%) of children with ADHD manifest defiance or authority problems. They exhibit temper tantrums and verbal hostility. Fifty per cent (50%) have sleep problems.
Learning from ADHD
The stats may be staggering and daunting. But be encouraged. There is good news. As a licensed therapist working with children with ADHD, I have been inspired and blessed to learn many things about the human brain and how to optimize it.
ADHD is a boon and not a burden. It is a blessing and not a plague. If we apply special techniques typically done on ADHD children to every human being, we will actually excel and reach our optimal performance level.
I’ve been doing active research on my class and we are reaping many benefits. Let me share a few.
1. The normal brain’s capacity to retain and capture the best information is usually in the first seven minutes. If you want a person to remember what you say, follow the KISS method. Keep It Short and Simple or Keep It Short and Snappy.Following this principle, I trained my teachers to be succinct. Unlike our traditional counterparts, it’s a sin to be lengthy.
The highest attention level is in the morning. Plan the day and present the most important concepts in the morning.
2. Aspire for action. My favorite is “Act, don’t yak!” Practice instead of preaching. After the first seven minutes of initial presentation (basic lesson concepts), allow the child or any learning adult to practice what has been presented. The hands are the tools of the intellect. Studies reveal that practical application boosts comprehension. The ADHD person is correct for desiring action.
“Normal” people have been subjected to years of traditional and tedious “abnormal” tests of endurance as they sit down for long hours and “pretend” to be in tune with the lecturer for long hours. All hearing without action is actually abnormal.
