Honey Prairie Fire crew grows smaller

As the Honey Prairie Fire grows slowly, the crew fighting the fire is shrinking.

The fire was measured at 300,443 acres Wednesday and was 70 percent contained with 450 personnel assigned to it.

Just a few weeks ago as the fire grew rapidly at times, there were more than 1,500 people assigned to the fire working with more than 100 fire engines.

The were 46 engines, 13 bulldozers and six helicopters assigned Wednesday.

Fire information officer Mark Wurdeman said the combined state and federal team will be replaced this weekend by a team headed by a Georgia Forestry Commission official; personnel from other agencies will fill vacancies.

Two big upland fires, the 19,000-acre Sweat Farm Again Fire and the 21,000-acre Race Pond Fire, have shown little activity in several days and are being monitored and contained by the Forestry Commission.

On the western side of the swamp near Fargo, Stephen C. Foster State Park's visitor center, museum and picnic area are open, but all boat rentals, trails, cabins and campsites remain closed.

All other entrances to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge are still closed.

Cicadas whirled away high in the surrounding thick forest. A new stone stands to mark what is now called Gen. Lyon Cemetery, which was noted on the marker to have been established about 1805. I walked in through a gate in a 500-yard, hip-high rock wall

Brush fire burns again in Hinesville - WTOC, Savannah, Georgia ...

Smoke and flames rose through the trees as Georgia Forestry crews worked to isolate the brush fire they thought they already had under control. Rain had knocked out most of the fire but enough of the peat moss in the ground kept smoldering until it burned to the surface again.

"We were working on the opposite side of entrance to the bog to mop up a small area when he looked and saw black smoke over here," said David Duke of the Georgia Forestry Commission. "When the humidity lowers and the fuel moisture dries and what little moisture was in the air is holding it down as it evaporated, the air heats up and it ignites the fuel and there she goes."

But the rain hurt as much as it helped as it turned fire breaks into mud pits that could stop a tractor in its tracks. Forestry crews have now fallen to their last resort. They're setting small fires inside the fire breaks they've already cut. They hope to burn up the brush that would fuel the fire if it gets that far and take away the fire's momentum.

With smoke blanketing parts of Hinesville, folks who live close by see what the crews are doing.

"It gets hot, it gets real smoky. It did this up north, I'm sure it gets even hotter down here. I can appreciate what they're doing," said Reinner Pearell whose house backs up to fire.

Duke said it will take more than a rain shower to extinguish the fire.

"We need a storm with a name, and obviously it's not (Tropical Storm) Bret," Duke said. "It could be a week, two weeks, three weeks, I don't know. They're going to have smoke issues to deal with depending on which way the wind's blowing."

He pledged they would keep working to widen the break between nearby houses and churches and the fire.
