Elks plan annual car show Aug. 6
The Crawfordsville Elks Lodge 483 will again team up with the Ben Hur Car Club to have its 9th annual Car Show on Aug. 6.
“Anywhere from 85 to 90 cars are expected,” said organizer Carsten Lemkau. “We have eight or nine classes of cars. I think the big draw for people is our diverse number of cars.”
Registration is from noon until 3 p.m. at the lodge, 3097 S.R. 32 (midway between Crawfordsville and Interstate 74). The fee is $15 and is open to cars, trucks and motorcycles. Awards will be distributed at 4 p.m. About 47 awards will be given out along with door prizes. Dash plaques with be given to the first 100 vehicles.
The event includes grilled food and drinks, the Elk’s American flag exhibit with a World War II military vehicle, 50s and 60s DJ Wes Shelton and licensed raffles.
“This year we’ve added a flea market,” Lemkau said.
Space is still available.
Later in the evening Dean Cline will play.
Lemkau expects 400 to 600 people will attend the car show throughout the day.
“Some people come for the cars, some come for the music and to eat,” he said.
Regardless of their reasons, members of the public are generous with their donations.
“When people learn this event helps fund cancer research, they tend to show their support,” Lemkau said. “Montgomery County, particularly Crawfordsville, is a very giving community.”
Proceeds from the event benefit the Elks Cancer Fund, a statewide Elk’s fund that is used to support cancer research at Indiana and Purdue universities. Last year about $1,500 was raised locally.
The event, with the exception of the band, is free to spectators and the general public.
For information or to make a donation, contact the Elks Lodge at 362-0705 or Carsten@localnet.com .

An Abstract From “the Tribute” by Dash Benhur
Babuli had got a job in Bhubaneswar and had settled there two years ago. Since then, he had never thought of home, though he had occasionally received letters from his mother. Seeing the letter, he remembered his past in a flash. During his childhood in the village, his elder brother used to take utmost care of his well-being. He would ask his wife to make the fish delicious for him using mustard paste. Even when the catch was scanty, the fish used to be prepared exclusively for Babuli. Seeding the letter, he felt a sense of guilt for having forgotten about his family. Babuli went through the letter from his elder brother. His two sisters-in-law had quarreled. His second brother wanted his share in the paternal property. His elder brother had written that his presence was inevitable at home at the time of the division of that property. Babuli felt despair when he finished his letter. That night when Babuli told of the letter to his wife, she asked him to give her the entire twenty-thousand rupees as she did not want the land of their share in the village. She wanted to buy a fridge, a scooter, a stereo, ornaments, etc. He felt as if he was being butchered. Babuli lamented the word ‘home’ and ‘brother’ no longer were the same. His heart had changed and he had become a stranger to all. Later on, he accompanied his wife to market and asked about the price of the various things. But his heart was not at peace. It was Saturday afternoon when Babuli left for home. He had the Prasad of Lord ‘Lingraj’ for his mother. But it scattered in the bus when he struck against the door and his briefcase fell off. He cursed himself for not taking care of the house. It was already dark when he reached home. His elder brother had reached to receive him. He was the same as before. He showed Babuli his usual love. He took by force the narrator’s briefcase to give him some rest. When both Babuli and his brother were walking on the village road, the past flashed before the former. In those student days, his elder brother used to escort him back home after the tuition. He would carry his books and notes along with the lantern. Sometimes, he would make him sit on his shoulders while strolling to the fields. When they reached home, Babuli’s nephews did not come to him as they did in the past, nor did his sister-in-law. His mother came to him. There was a strange stillness at home. His other brother and his wife also showed no interest in him.
