Northwest, Birdville educators are regional Teachers of the Year

An English teacher at Richland High School and a second grade teacher at Kay Granger Elementary School have been named Regional Teachers of the Year in an annual competition sponsored by the Texas Education Agency.

The announcement by the Region IX Education Service Center was made at a Thursday banquet, according to a news release.

Christina Buce teaches second grade at Kay Granger Elementary, which is in Keller but is part of the Northwest school district. Gertrude "Trudie" Byers teaches gifted and talented students and pre-advanced placement English at Birdville's Richland High School in North Richland Hills.

This year, 49 teachers from 25 school districts in north central Texas participated in the program. The two regional winners now advance to compete against other educators from around the state for the Texas Teacher of the Year award.

Selection committees plan to meet on Monday and expect to name three elementary teachers and three secondary teachers as semifinalists. The winners are to be announced in October.

Northwest School District board members welcomed three new administrators at a reception prior to Thursday’s board meeting.

Tracy Edwards is the district's new executive director of elementary education. Edwards comes from the Rockwood School District where she was responsible for assessments, gifted programs, remedial reading, Title I programs and overall K-5 programming.

Edwards said joining Northwest was a great opportunity.

“I’m looking forward to working with the elementary schools, administrative services, said he was already impressed with what he’d seen of the district. Russell will oversee the departments of facilities, food service, transportation and information technology. He previously worked for the Macon, MO, school district.

“What I’m seeing throughout the district is the people are really helpful and committed to making sure Northwest is the best district it can be,” Russell said.

Jeff Taggart is the new Northwest activities director, responsible for coordination of all athletics and activities in grades 6-12. He joins Northwest from the California, MO, school district.

“It’s a very welcoming place,” Taggart said of Northwest, adding that he was suitably impressed with the district’s athletic programs. “Hopefully, I can keep the ship sailing in the right direction."
