, Big-time success and what it’s like going “outside the box” with songwriting.Boston Music Spotlight (BMS): You started out just a few years ago playing in coffee shops, and this summer you played The Tonight Show. Did you feel like you’d arrived?
Mat Kearney (MK) : I think I’m still going – I hope! [Laughs] I always feel like I’m still going. I mean, on one level I had a ton of success on the first run – on my first album. So, in some ways I’ve had to live in the shadow of that. But on other levels, it feels like it keeps slowly going forward. I know I’m not satisfied yet. I’m still hungry to keep going.
BMS: You’ve said that Young Love is like “how a singer-songwriter would approach hip-hop”. How important is it to you to go outside of the box with your music?
MK : Because I’m already working with a pretty wide area of influence in my music – there’s the hip-hop thing, there’s the singer-songwriter thing, there’s the rock element – it keeps me inspired to push the boundaries in different directions and to explore different sides of what I love to do.
BMS: What is your songwriting process like?
MK : It’s not very consistent. There’s some days where it’s 2 a.m. and I’m sitting with my guitar in my living room, writing a song for hours. There’s other times where I’m in the studio and I work on making beats together with someone and I’m dancing around the room with a pen and pad in my hand, and then a guitar. Or there’s other times when we get a bunch of people together in the same room, like in Nashville, and try to write a song together. It’s very different every time – especially with this record, there were a lot of different ways to write.
BMS: Lots of people are first hearing of your music through TV or film. How do you feel about that?
MK : Well, 20 years ago you would have never had a problem with getting your song into a movie. And I think television has moved in that direction, too, so it feels like it fits more. My songs might have been odd in a Family Ties episode [laughs] back in the day, but I think TV’s moved in a very dramatic way. Music has really leant itself [to the medium]; it really fits. I think it’s just part of the new thing. It’s the new way people find out about you. When my first record came out, we had a song in the season premier of “Grey’s Anatomy”, when it was at its height. It really helped get the needle moving.
