Stepanek downs Monfils to lift Washington crown

Thirty two year old Czech Davis Cupper Radek Stepanek refuses to admit he is in the twillight of his career. In a sport where approaching 30 is considered old and being on the wrong side of it archaic, the world no.54 picked up the biggest title of his 15-year professional career with a clinical 6-4, 6-4 win again top seed and world no.7 Gael Monfils in the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C.

Stepanek came into the match with a 2-5 record against Monfils and was very much the underdog. Monfils was younger, faster and stronger, but has always been a bit of a nervy nelly on final Sundays, winning just 3 of 13 Tour finals coming into this match.

Stepanek started the brighter of the pair, breaking serve in the third game of the opening set to nudge ahead. Despite serving at an abysmal 30% in the first set, Stepanek had enough juice on his second delivery to ensure he got through it without conceding even a single break point.

The second set proved to be a mirror image of the first. Stepanek picked up the early break and packed his bags for the home stretch. His first serve percentage improved to a still ordinary 46%, but he won all 12 points when he landed it, and once again did not offer Monfils a glimmer of a chance to break back.

Monfils to his credit won just 6 points less than Stepanek in the entire match, but his inability to make an impression on the Stepanek serve and early break conceded in either set meant that he was always behind in the contest. Stepanek wrapped up the win in a little over an hour and a half to pick up his first Tour title of 2011, and the fifth of his career.

The win saw him pocked 500 ATP Tour ranking points, a cool cheque for $264,000 and will see him jump to no.27 in the new rankings.

In the men's doubles final the 3rd seeded pairing of Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic edged out Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in a nail biting contest, 6-7, 7-6, [10-7].
