Letter: Current Building Is Inadequate

I bought my home in East Hills in November of 1964 and have been a resident of the village for the past 47 years.  I am also a member of the Roslyn Highlands volunteer fire company and an EMT (emergency medical technician) with the Roslyn Fire Companies ambulance service.

There have been a lot of questions lately about the project to rebuild our East Hills fire station on Harbor Hill Road. By writing to you I hope to clear up any concerns or misconceptions that you and your family may have.

The Roslyn Highlands volunteer firefighters have been providing fire protection to the residents of the Village of East Hills and the surrounding communities since 1905. In the 1990s we started providing Emergency Medical Services as well. Each and every member of our company freely volunteers and receives no pay or compensation for firefighting.

The present firehouse at East Hills was built in 1964. It was originally designed to house a single fire truck not much larger than an ambulance is today. At the time I was one of only 10 volunteers who lived close enough to respond to the East Hills station. Over the past 47 years I have watched both the Village of East Hills and the Roslyn Highlands Fire Company change a great deal. I am now one of 35 volunteers in this area who respond to that same East Hills station.

The building is inadequate. Over the years the ceiling of the truck room was raised and the length of the building extended just to accommodate a modern fire truck. Subsequently we have squeezed in an ambulance and the medical first response vehicle and lined the walls with the protective suits for those volunteers. This has left only inches for us to struggle to don our gear. Behind the East Hills station, the now rusting, steel double door garage also was added for additional space.

We are trying to avoid the mistake made 50 years ago in building too small a station. The new station will allow us to house the vehicles currently located inside the East Hills station and the garage, along with other emergency equipment, much of it infrequently used, that is now rusting in our parking lot.

I understand residents’ concerns about their safety traveling on Harbor Hill Road once the East Hills station is completed, and I know the Roslyn Highlands fire company has always shared those concerns. The new firehouse will be set back far enough from Harbor Hill Road to give our drivers a clear, wide view of oncoming traffic, bicyclists, and pedestrians. For added safety a new traffic light will be installed on Harbor Hill Road.
