Former Enterprise skipper fights for Navy career

Fired aircraft carrier skipper Capt. Owen P. Honors made his first appearance Tuesday before a panel of admirals examining whether he should remain in the Navy. Among other evidence, Honors' lawyer submitted hundreds of pages of statements from his supporters.

The three-member panel convened at Norfolk Naval Station to accept documentary evidence - the statements, investigation reports and a hard drive of videos - that it will review over the next two weeks.

A Navy lawyer representing Honors, Capt. Michael Palmer, submitted two thick white binders containing Honors' service record and fitness reports, as well as the statements from his backers, many of which were gathered after Honors solicited them on his website, www.captowenhonors.com .

The board is scheduled to meet again Aug. 23 to hear testimony and arguments.

At issue is whether Honors should be administratively discharged from the Navy. He was fired as commanding officer of the Norfolk-based carrier Enterprise in January, after videos he made during his tenure as executive officer became public.

Honors has argued that the videos, which he broadcast for the ship's crew, helped to boost morale. Among other things, they contained anti-gay jokes, shots of a subordinate dressed in drag, and scenes of sailors pretending to shower together, masturbate and perform rectal exams on each other.

The panel of admirals is tasked with determining whether Honors engaged in misconduct or substandard performance. It will make a recommendation as to whether Honors should stay in the Navy. If the panel recommends discharge, its members will also issue an opinion on whether Honors' retirement pay grade should be reduced.

Final decisions will be made by the secretary of the Navy.

A military lawyer for the government also submitted documentary evidence, including the Navy's investigation into the videos, conducted this winter, and the hard drive carrying roughly 70 videos.

The proceedings lasted about half an hour. Honors wore his uniform and spoke only to answer a few procedural questions. His civilian lawyer, Charles Gittins, wasn't present, though he plans to attend on Aug. 23, Honors told the admirals.

Honors produced the videos and broadcast them aboard the Enterprise from late 2005 through 2007, when he was the ship's second-in-command. He became the carrier's commanding officer last year but was removed after the videos came to light. Honors starred in them, wrote the scripts and recruited subordinates to work on them, primarily while the Enterprise was deployed. The videos were shown across the ship on closed-circuit TV, generally before Saturday night movies.

I was on the pill for approximately five years before I had to cease taking hormonal birth control because some tests revealed that I have some risks for blood clot and stroke that don't play well with HBC. That was approximately two months ago and I have now had my Paragard for approximately one month (it took a while to get the appointment for the Paragard insertion so I had a month where we relied on condoms, but I had to stop taking the pill the day they got the test results). While I was on the HBC my discharge changed with my cycle. As I got nearer to my period it became thicker and gave off a more distinct smell. It always stayed white, like you're explaining, and it also formed into white pools around the base of my partner's penis. He never seemed to mind it (the smell or the accumulation), but I was actively displeased. I had been on the HBC for so many years, though, that I just thought that was my normal discharge leading up to my period, so when I switched to a non-hormonal method and it dissipated and disappeared I was surprised and thrilled. I guess this doesn't really shed light on your situation, but I think what I experienced is the same as what you're describing and the only thing that changed when it went away was the hormones. Were you on a different kind of HBC prior to the Mirena?
