U.S. Lawns is a 25-year-old company based in Orlando, Fla. It has more than 240 franchises in the 48 contiguous states. Nelson's operation is one of two in Kansas.

Nelson, 32, has worked in lawn care since moving here from Abilene eight years ago. He started a lawn service called Greener Pastures with his father-in-law, Terry Engler, in 2005.

Nelson's wife, Trisha, handles the bookkeeping. Engler helps out but is devoting more time to his work as a pastor.

As part of his agreement with U.S. Lawns, Nelson paid a one-time franchise fee and also remits a royalty based on sales.

In exchange, Nelson benefits from U.S. Lawns' bidding system, training at its Orlando headquarters, a website and other marketing tools. There's also a "regional assistance guy," Nelson said, who's on call nearly all the time to help with any other questions.

In the highly competitive world of lawn service, Nelson said, those elements can give him an edge.

Nelson is continuing to maintain lawns for residential customers he carried over from Greener Pastures but says the commercial side of the landscape maintenance business is more lucrative. For one thing, residential customers are more likely to drop lawn service in tough economic times.

"But the commercial properties, they really want their yards to look neat," he said.

Commercial customers include school campuses, shopping centers and industrial parks, health care facilities and apartment properties.

Nelson said a big part of keeping customers happy "is about communication. We want to make sure we do exactly what is asked of us, sometimes above and beyond. Get all the weeds out of the bed, (make sure) the trimming is nice and crisp, get all the debris out."

One thing that hasn't changed since the affiliation with U.S. Lawns, he said, "is the way we work. We were all about the quality. It's just the structure has changed.
