Teens learn about roles in disaster management

Bags of potato chips, hot dogs and hamburgers, adult chaperones and some homework materials: By all appearances, it seemed like a typical summer camp experience.

That is until the FBI special agent walked in and started talking about chemical weapons, and the lab technician explained how she dealt with an anthrax attack.

This was no Camp Sleepaway but rather a fairly intensive two-week day camp held in July at St. Vincent’s College, 75 Hunting Street in Bridgeport.

Instead of fun and games, this camp was dedicated to teaching kids ages 13-18 about the roles of professionals — with a focus on healthcare — in a variety of disaster situations.

A total of 155 teens from Fairfield, Shelton, Derby, Orange, Bridgeport, Stratford, Waterbury, Milford, Trumbull, Ansonia and Seymour attended.

Titled “Why Not You,” the community outreach camp offered a different theme each day of the week, aligned with that day’s programming.

For example, Hazmat Mondays offered live demonstrations by local fire, ambulance and hospital crews. First Aid Thursdays focused on first aid certification and included a film about the 1918-19 influenza pandemic.

The camp was provided free of charge, funded through a Health and Education Initiatives Grant from the Connecticut Department of Higher Education, Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Office for Workforce Competitiveness.

An afternoon program on Terrorism Tuesday presented canine handlers with their search and rescue dogs, followed by a state lab technician and FBI agent, who spoke about terrorism and disaster response.

The mission

“Our goal is to get more males and minorities into nursing and healthcare careers,” said Susan Capasso, dean of academic services at St. Vincent’s College, about the camp’s mission. “This is the fourth year we are conducting the camp, and each summer has a different theme.

“This year we’ve focused on the role of healthcare workers in disasters, with hazmat exercises, interactions with first responders, terrorism talks, weather emergency presentations, CSI, forensics, and search and rescue. In addition to attending the classes, campers are required to develop a family emergency plan and start storing certain survival gear,” she said.

Capasso’s objective is for the participants to be better prepared in case of a disaster or emergency. “Kids are scared of terrorism,” she said. “We advise them on how to protect themselves and prepare.” At the same time, she hopes they will consider a career in healthcare.

FDA Salmonella Study Funding Opportunity | Global Animal Health

CVM is seeking applications that will provide information on the prevalence of Salmonella in fecal samples from both symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs and cats brought to veterinary clinics to gain insight into the frequency of Salmonella-infected companion animals.

Bacteria will be isolated, identified and serotyped by the participating laboratories and the isolates will be submitted to FDA. DNA analysis will help CVM determine if the Salmonella strains isolated from pets are genetically similar to strains previously isolated from humans or animal feeds. The data from this study will help CVM prioritize investigations of foodborne diseases which adversely affect animal and human health. The data will also help the FDA rank future surveillance efforts.

The awarded cooperative agreements will be with the Veterinary Laboratory Response Network (Vet-LRN). Vet-LRN is a CVM program that coordinates facilitates expertise of government and veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the U.S. and Canada in response to investigations of animal food or drug related illnesses.

Requirements to apply for a Vet-LRN cooperative agreement include demonstrating an adequate veterinary case load, technical expertise and ability to conduct the appropriate volume of cultures. Applicants will also be evaluated as to their accreditation status and geographical location to provide program balance and a diverse patient population. The deadline for submission of applications is Aug. 15.
